Do you have a favorite pet?
I actually love lots of different kinds of animals but my favorite to have as a furry friend is, by far, a dog.
I have had many over the years.
As an adult, my first pet was a tiny dachshund puppy.
He was the sweetest thing. And totally mine! I have been smitten with miniature dachshunds ever since. Over the years I have had several. You notice, I did not say “owned”. I’m not certain one can actually own a wienie dog. They are independent, cocky little creatures. They can dig a hole to China before you know it, uproot all your plants, bark uncontrollably at anything that moves, tear up every toy you give them and burrow their way right into your heart!
They will keep you warm at night, snuggled close enough to feel your heartbeat, and protected from whatever intruder who might be foolhardy enough to venture into their territory, then wake you with endless kisses from that yard-long tongue they all seem to possess. They will steal your lunch, if allowed, or, at least, beg until you feel guilty enough to share. And run through the house at breakneck speed, just because.
If I believed in reincarnation, I would swear the pup who lives in my house at present is an old soul, inhabiting an animal’s skin until he pays his debt. I try to make his life as easy as possible. Most days, I see only a little black and tan dog, following me around. He is never far from me. If I do manage to slip away, he comes looking. He has a blankie in every room where he can curl up and wait while I work.
Sometimes, when I least expect it, he will climb onto my lap and position himself so he can look directly into my face. He is serious. Profoundly serious. His eyes are as deep as eternity as he looks into mine. He does not blink. Just looks. Trying to convey… What? It gives me pause and makes me wonder.
Do you have a pet that gives you such joy that you cannot imagine your life without it? I do.
